Sophisticated, intricate and complex music is written by pianist Keigo Hirakawa and performed by his team of Rafael Statin/sax-flpbcl, Brandon Scott Coleman/g, Robert Hurst/b and Alex White/dr. The songs demand various shapes and sizes, with “Yaw Pitch Roll” a snappy trio work in the concept of advanced Herbie Hancock, while the title track has Statin’s tenor riding an intense white knuckler. The team bops cleverly with Statin’s soprano on “Far Above” and Coleman’s guitar during ”Unmarked Path” with things getting dark on “Origami Beetle”. Hurst cuts a deep rug with Hirakawa on the stretched out “Home Somewhere” and the band digs in for “Change of Plans”. Grey matter grooves.
